Coming Soon: Comedians Steve Sabo, Jake Dickey and Brian Myers

Steve Sabo, Jake Dickey, Brian Myers poster

WHO’S PERFORMING?  Comedians Steve Sabo, Jake Dickey & Brian Myers

WHAT TO EXPECT?  Hopefully laughter!

Three seasoned comedians will fill the stage for a night of comedy. Brian Myers has a dark, crude sense of humor that is bound to push the limits of decency at some point. Jake Dickey has a strange twist on observational humor that always turns into a dialogue of what happens under the covers.

Headliner Steve Sabo touts an impressive resume that includes HBO, NBC and Comedy Central. His energetic, comedic delivery is hard to ignore and lures you into his warped point of view. Sabo plays off the audience and like most comedians uses their laughter to build his set.

WHERE IS IT?  The Cafe Acoustic, 2605 Frederick Ave., St Joseph, MO 64506

WHEN IS IT?  Sunday, April 14, 2013; 8:00pm, 21+ $12 advance ($15 day of show)

WHY SHOULD I GO?  Laughing is infectious. Think about how much funnier movies are in the theater with a hundred or so other people laughing with you. You will laugh, out loud. There will be no brick wall as a backdrop or even a red curtain but the small venue should morph into a box of laughs. Smoking is encouraged; drinking is strongly encouraged and it’s even on a Sunday night. It will give you something to look forward to while you are in church; or more likely, something to do instead of church. If somebody doesn’t get offended; it wasn’t a good show.

Dsoedean vs. This Tall Records: The Story of Continue To Move

Dsoedean is an eager St. Joseph, Missouri based band who plans to release their first full length album Continue To Move this spring. The only problem is that Dsoedean is signed to the small independent label This Tall Records based in Savannah, Missouri.

“The record should already be out.” says Zale Bledsoe, lead singer of Dsoedean. “We thought attaching ourselves to a label would speed up the process of things like this.” The head of This Tall Records asked not to be named in this article but was glad to give me his side of the story. For the purposes of this article we will call him Jordan. Jordan said “Bands just think that you can record anything and an album magically happens… there is a reason bands want to be signed to labels, so they can have the financials taken care of.” Jordan would go on at length about how a once great relationship between he and Bledsoe slowly turned sour as the record Continue To Move clogged production for This Tall Records and Dsoedean.

“We are a small label and we value our artists,” Jordan says “at some point you have to focus on other artists though.” Dsoedean started conception of the album in early 2012 with songs dating back to when the band first formed a couple years before. Bledsoe was joined by local musicians Bobby Floyd on drums, Marcus Words on bass and Colby Walter on guitar and keyboards for the recording. Bledsoe, the obvious leader and drive behind Dsoedean, was outspoken about troubles from the beginning in recording the record. “We want to do it right” Bledsoe said, “We want a professional product, that’s why we went to a label.” The band is revered in the local music scene and the music from their 3 studio EPs and one live EP are well known in the St. Joseph area. Friends and fans of the band are loyal to seeing the group when they play in town, they always ask the same question though, “How’s the album coming?”

It started with the idea of a vinyl single according to Jordan, the music was originally planned to be released as a cd but then the group decided on doing vinyl and the relationship between the band and record label became strained. “Vinyl is expensive to make.” Jordan would say “Yeah, vinyl is cool and hipsters love it but damn it, it cost a lot of money to press and it is difficult to make that money back.” Bledsoe said on the vinyl issue that it is important to him. “We are making a statement by putting our music on vinyl, anyone can throw some tunes down on a cd-r and call it an album; our music matters and the record will indicate we are serious about it.” There will also be digital downloads and cds but the vinyl is a selling point for the band.

Dsoedean opens for The Please Please Me on 1/19/13 in St. Joseph, MO.

This Tall Records has had good luck with other artists such as Wade Williamson and For The Sound in releasing music quickly. Their music is available on the bandcamp website for download all the payments go through This Tall Records. Pressing music to vinyl is simply a longer process and it can’t be as instantly gratifying. The record label is even working with other groups for future releases including Blues-funk powerhouse The GasTown Lamps and the mysterious Sexwolph.

Kiley Bodenhamer recorded Continue To Move for Dsoedean and felt caught in the middle between the band and label. “The band would tell me to do one thing then (Jordan) would call me up and tell me he wanted it the exact opposite way.” Bodenhamer has worked with the band in the past but says this record was far more difficult to record. “The band wanted to get it right and the label didn’t wan’t to spring for extra studio time. At one point I thought about putting my name on the project under an assumed name but (Jordan) said that would be the name on the my check and I didn’t think the bank would cash it. [laughs]” Bodenhamer says.

The Dsoedean album being pressed to vinyl isn’t the only problem in the relationship between the record label and band. “They told us not to play” drummer Bobby Floyd says “They put a hold on our local shows to try to build up anticipation for the album release. I have a newborn that needs diapers and baby food, I need all the extra income I can get from those shows and we can’t play now.” Other members of Dsoedean took an interesting approach, they ambitiously took on side projects. Marcus Words is now a regular with rising country star Aaron Blumer where he plays bass. “It pays some bills” Words said “I’d love to be playing with Dsoedean but when the shows aren’t there I grab my bass and go play with Aaron.” Colby Walter spread himself a little more thin than Words, he would play with several bands. Walter plays bass in The Motors, plays solo shows, has been linked to the band Jamazon Cloud and things have recently picked up on his mandolin gig with The Souveneers.

So what is Bledsoe doing? “I’m playing some solo shows now, I mean I can’t draw the audience that Dsoedean does, but I have my own songs and it keeps me sharp while Dsoedean is on hold.” Bledsoe is constantly in negotiations with This Tall Records to get things going on Continue To Move. “The record to me is basically everything I’ve ever done musically put into one place, it took us a few months to record but it took me well over 20 years to conceive that record. I can’t stand the fact that it is just sitting on the shelf right now”

Jordan promises it will see the light of day. It will be out on cd and digital download and there will be a 7 inch vinyl single. No release date is set as of yet but the wheels are turning on it. “He (Bledsoe) doesn’t realize that this record is very dear to me too, it is almost as if I recorded it and sang on it myself; my blood and tears are in that music as well.”

Almost none of this is true; there were no interviews done for this article. It is true that Dsoedean will be releasing Continue To Move on This Tall Records, just about everything else is total bullshit. This is intended as a honorable tribute to one of my favorite bands. I’m proud of the guys for doing their record right and not rushing out an inferior product. Continue to move gentleman. Happy April Fools Day!

Guest Column: Matthew Coman: Top Six Live Albums

Clint Wiederholt and Danny R. Phillips wrote columns about their six favorite live albums. Some of the albums on those lists hit the nail right on the head, but just as Mr. Wiederholt said, every list is different. That is how it should be. I will now present a list of my top six favorite live albums of all time. I wouldn’t say it’s the perfect list, but it is.

Alice In Chains - Unplugged

Alice in Chains – Unplugged

Back when MTV used to have music, the unplugged series was probably one of their finest achievements. A lot of people will reference Nirvana’s “Unplugged in New York” as they should, but the perfect blended harmonies of Jerry Cantrell and Lane Staley on the tracks “Over Now”, “Got Me Wrong”, and “Heaven Beside You” come running up right alongside Nirvana’s “Unplugged”. Hell, even “Rooster” is listenable as astounding as that may seem after years and years of radio over-play.

Nirvana - Live At Reading

Nirvana – Complete Reading Festival 1992

Speaking of Nirvana, when I was about twelve years old and had finally gotten around to discovering great music, I fell in love with my cassette of Nirvana’s “Nevermind”. I was hooked, and what ensued was an almost OCD type of obsession with getting every live recording/bootleg available. I would look their bootlegs up on websites, download the songs, and even print out the artwork. All of these CDs which I still have today.

The show begins with Cobain being wheeled onto the stage wearing a wig and a hospital gown. He gets up pretending to be in a weak state to sing the opening lines to “The Rose” by Bette Midler. After he falls to stage, they go right into “Breed”. Was it their best sounding recording? No… Was it Nirvana being Nirvana? Yes… Every song you want to hear is on this double disc live album. “Drain You”, “School”, “Lounge Act”, “On A Plain, “Negative Creep”, and “Blew” are many among the many great songs performed that night. It was Nirvana with their silliness, their edge, and giving it their all. You’ve even got “Spank Thru” and “D-7”. What else could you ask for?

Elliott Smith - Live At Irving Plaza

Elliott Smith – 3/26/99- Irving Plaza- NY, NY

Those familiar with who I like to call the sixth Beatle (Brian Epstein was the fifth)- Elliott Smith was an amazing songwriter and musician. Here we catch one of the only good copies of him live with a full band, and it’s an asbolute favorite of mine. Elliott Smith covers just about everything from his catalogue at this show. “Coming Up Roses” from his self titled album, “2:45 AM”, “Baby Britain”, “Son of Sam, “Waltz #2”, “Independence Day”, and “St. Ides Heaven” are among many other amazing songs performed on this night. “Flowers for Charlie”, a song recorded for “From A Basement on a Hill, Smith’s last unfinished work is the closer to this amazing show.

Jackson Browne - Solo Acoustic Vol. 2

Jackson Browne – Solo Acoustic Vol. 2

“The Night Inside Me”… One listen to that song and you tell me this isn’t a live album to sit around and stew with. Browne’s acoustic guitar playing, his tone, his voice, and his accompanying story telling is what makes this live album so great. “Something Fine” will stop you dead in your tracks. Browne tells stories of staying with Stephen Stills in some grand house, and his giant guitar collection he hauled around. He talks of a girl he met while staying with Stills which inspired the song “Something Fine”. “Casino Nation” has some interesting lines, as Browne tells about the song being a metaphor for our public and private lives. If this CD had gotten stuck inside my car stereo I would have been absolutely fine with that. I didn’t take it out for weeks any way.

Neil Young - Unplugged

Neil Young – Unplugged

What can I say about this album? Here’s something honest- I have not delved enough as I should into Neil Young’s live catalogue, but I heard “Unplugged” when I was fifteen and I love it still. Neil’s voice is strong. My favorite song performed off this album has to be “Helpless”, with its backing vocals that make it absolutely astounding. The interesting acoustic take on “Mr. Soul” is another favorite of mine, and how am I going to leave out the dreamy sound of “Harvest Moon”? My favorite Young record by far. “Unknown Legend” is another beauty.

What makes this such a great live performance is Neil with his backing vocalists. He was on point. “Long May You Run” has a beautiful piano accompanying it alongside the voices of female singers who do a stellar job of blending with Young. Sometimes it’s where you were, the first time, and how it hit you that makes a favorite your favorite. That is definitely the case with this album, for me.

Nine Inch Nails - And All That Could Have Been

Nine Inch Nails – And All That Could Have Been

Aside from the fact that “The Fragile” album and tour may have been the best thing Trent Reznor has done so far in his career next to his album “The Year Zero”, watching this show almost makes you feel like you are there. The projectors, visualizations, moments of heavy rock n’ roll stomping next to somewhat empty, atmosphere driven songs like “The Great Below” make you wish you had been there. Reznor puts all of his strength into this show. The song “The Mark Has Been Made”, a very cool slow jam with cello, guitar, and bass leading into a wah riff that sets the song ablaze makes me wish time travel were a viable option.

Some of my favorite songs off this album are the transitioning ones. Songs like “Just Like You Imagined” have such a power to them. The build-up to the songs crescendo with Reznor’s whispers swirling all around, pounding all over the keyboard, and wavering in and out of key. Reznor has a knack for pushing the boundaries of what some might consider melodic. Hearing it is an amazing thing. Buying the DVD and watching “the show” is another. Chills I tell ya.

Honorable Mentions:  Primus – “hallucino-genetics,” The Grateful Dead – Live at Winterland, Pearl Jam – Unplugged, Tom Waits – VH1 Storytellers, Wilco, “Kicking Television – Live in Chicago’,The Allman Brothers – Live at Fillmore East and The Beatles – Rooftop Concert

VOT concert posters! – Ashley Raines

Ashley Raines is a great singer and songwriter from Colorado. I originally saw him at the Cafe Acoustic in St. Joseph, Missouri and it has led to me tracking his career closely. This is (right now, as I post this) an upcoming show in nearby Forest City, Missouri at a cool little bar named The Dawg House. The inspiration for this poster came from Raines’ newest digital single “Old Time Religion” (hence the gentleman holding the bible in front of an old frontier home.) I wanted a bit of a mysterious and sinister vibe with this poster which led to the color selections as well. Look for an upcoming preview and review of this show on Vocals On Top.

VOT concert posters! – Calling Nickelback

This was an April Fools Day joke that just hit the nail right on the head back in 2012. I am likely more proud of that article than most of the serious ones I have written. Thanks for being a semi-good sport about it Sam Blumer. Here is the link to the article if you are interested and and a copy of the fake poster I designed for the fake show:

VOT concert posters! – Missouri Homegrown

The situation was that one band was double booked and cancelled at The Cafe Acoustic and Missouri Homegrown stepped in with about 3 days notice to play a show. In those three days a big snowstorm of about 7-8 inches hit and many people were hesitant to get out. Because the show was so short notice it had no poster so I whipped this one out to promote the show:
