Coming Soon: Universe Contest / Missouri Homegrown / Cupcake

Universe Contest St. Joseph Poster

Universe Contest St. Joseph Poster

WHO’S PLAYING?  Cupcake (St. Joseph, MO) Universe Contest (Lincoln, NE) Missouri Homegrown (St. Joseph, MO)

WHAT TO EXPECT?  A show that will knock your damn socks off…

Cupcake has been called St. Joseph’s best band by many and after seeing them perform live it is hard to argue with. If you like FM radio hits and songs you can sing along to don’t bother looking into Cupcake’s music though, you won’t like it. This band doesn’t make music for the faint-hearted, they will make you work for it. A song for the group is like walking through a hedge maze; you think you have it figured out and you are certain of what is around the next corner but then your world gets turned upside down and you are once again lost. You struggle to make it through, attempting to understand the logic of what you have just experienced, you get frustrated and mad but after it is over you realize you feel as exhilarated as you ever have and you want nothing more than to do it again.

Cupcake sounds like: Modest Mouse, The Pixies, your inner child getting laid for the first time.

Universe Contest is another band that you won’t be able to figure out right away. As soon as their set starts you see the human beings that make up the group disappear as they get in touch with their primitive sides. The show will take place in a dark, enclosed space that will be filled with strategic lighting and smoke machines. It will leave almost everything to the imagination and make you take the music by the hand and let it guide you through the great unknown. It will be a sight and a journey you won’t soon forget.

Universe Contest sounds like: The Stooges, Pavement, getting an anal probe from aliens… and liking it.

Missouri Homegrown will be an interesting contrast after Universe Contest. If Universe Contest’s music takes you by the hand and guides you; Missouri Homegrown’s music punches you in the face and kicks you three times before you hit the ground. They will summon personal demons and tragedies and conjure them up in musical form to let you know how the other half lives. Their grittiness is only overshadowed by undeniably pop hooks and rustic guitar solos. PBR is not required to enjoy their set but it will help you understand the band better.

Missouri Homegrown sounds like: Drive-By Truckers, Tom Petty, a whiskey bottle being finished at 10am.

WHERE IS IT?  The Rendezvous, 619 Felix St  St Joseph, MO 64501

WHEN IS IT?  Saturday, February 1st, 2013; 9:00pm sharp, $3

WHY SHOULD I GO?

  • 3 bands for $3… If you complain about that price you deserve to have your ass kicked
  • There will likely be brief nudity and prolonged adult situations
  • Cupcake will bring the weird, it might be whippets or just a hula dance, it’s really hard to tell
  • Universe Contest is from out of state, you won’t see anything like their show anytime soon
  • Universe Contest also brings a ton of merch, there is no telling what it will be
  • You might get lucky and see Universe Contests tour bus, Dharma 2000 (ladies, you have a better shot than the gents at this)
  • Missouri Homegrown will deliver their same hard hitting, unapologetic set
  • I know, I know… The Paradox Theater opening is that night; you should probably just try to hit both at some point
  • It’s a Saturday night in February; get the hell out of the house…

Album at a glance: Maps For Travelers – Change Your Name

Maps For Travelers - Change Your NameIf you are into amped up guitars and passionate screaming vocals you will love Maps For Travelers’ first full-length album “Change Your Name.” The tracks on the record are painted with distorted guitar textures that will bring to mind Cursive and The Desaparecidos. Crunchy riffs are in abundance on songs like “Matter of Time” and “Get a New Face” while slow building songs like “Swoon” are still right in this band’s wheelhouse. The songs are best when the lyrics are delivered intensely but with short of a screaming vocals like on “World on a Wire” You should listen for the honest lyrics, but you’ll stay for the power guitar hooks

Key Track: “Matter of Time”

Album at a glance: Jerkface – JERKFACE!

Jerkface JERKFACE!

If you want something unique, look no further than this online only release by Jerkface. Their punkbilly-surf music is perfectly accented by the fuzzy distortion of the guitars and the distinct sound of trombone blasts as heard on the instrumental “As They Roll In.” “Alien Girl” is two minutes of near perfect power pop while the twang of “Dirty Worn Out Road” and its smoking guitar solo shows the band’s country side. “Trainwreck” might remind you of Sublime but don’t let that scare you off, it is much better than that and just helps show the versatility and talent of this band.

250 Word Album Review: Sincerely, Iris – Best Left Free

Sincerely, Iris - Best Left Free

Sincerely, Iris - Best Left Free gets 3 starsSincerely, Iris’ Best Left Free is an interesting listen but you need to work for it. At the surface you hear the steady acoustic strums and get lulled to sleep a bit before you realize there are hidden nuances that could easily go unnoticed.

The songs have interesting textures for being largely just simple acoustic numbers. Songs are each given their own musical identity, like the gentle crescendo building on “Right To You” that makes the sappy, ultimate sweetness of the song keep from getting too sugary to digest. The steady death march strums of “Already Dead” has an intensity and focus that is unparalleled on the rest of the record. Much of the album is made up of songs that will make you feel like you are seeing a good open mic performance. The lullabyesque “Into The Dark” and the Jack Johnson softness of “Far Away” are largely what you’ll get here.

Special moments like the tinge of Spanish sounding guitar on “After Sunday School” and the jangly power strums of the opening track “Best Left Free” are among the stronger moments here. If the ultra sensitive guy can break character long enough to keep throwing curve balls like these onto his records he should find a nice balance with room for love songs and slower numbers. Many times it is the difference in the shades that makes things stand out. You might have to listen closely to appreciate Sincerely, Iris right now but their are rewards to reap if you do.

Key Tracks: “Already Dead” “After Sunday School”

Album at a glance: Wade Williamson – Tomorrow Could Have Been Yesterday

Wade Williamson - Tomorrow Could Have Been Yesterday

St. Joseph’s Wade Williamson has a heartbroken country croon and the lyrics to match. This EP reads as a Ryan Adams tribute in his most devastated state. “Summer Dress” and “Threw My Picture Away” seep of desperation and pain with their adorning acoustic strums. The anti-war protest song “Uncle Sam” changes the pace of the lovelorn set while giving a nod to when Bob Dylan had a political conscious. “She Drew From The Hip” closes the EP as its most rocking and intense moments with its burning vocals.

Key Track:  “Summer Dress”

Tanner Ferguson of Grindstone Creek’s best of 2013

Tanner Ferguson is a guitarist/keyboardist/singer in the St. Joseph, Missouri based band Grindstone Creek. Look for them to have a big year in 2014 as we will hopefully will have some new recorded music from them soon. In the meantime check out their facebook page and give them a “like”: https://www.facebook.com/grindstonecreek

Here is Tanner’s Best of 2013 list:

Jerkface JERKFACE!

5. Jerkface!- Jerkface

Jerkface is a riot on stage. Few bands get your blood pumping as much as they do. They look like rockstars and act the part but what really gets me is Pete Bailey’s trombone in the mix of all that crazy. That cat has chops.

Matthew Coman - No Other Animal

4. No Other Animal- Matthew Coman

Matt just gets it. Since he was younger the guy was always studying rock n roll. I swear his mind is made up of drum kicks and guitar riffs. Can’t wait to see what else is coming!

Dsoedean - Continue To Move

3. Continue to Move- Dsoedean

Zale Bledsoe has arguably done more for our town’s music scene than anyone else. Not only is his band killer, but he started his own record label to support other artists. You can catch him on any given night supporting the local music scene. And the man has given me plenty of advice to be a better artist and person. Thank you Zale.

Radkey - Cat & Mouse EP

2. Devil Fruit/ Cat and Mouse EPs- Radkey

I promise you that you will remember the first time you hear the roar these kids make. I personally stood in shock for several songs. Not being able to fathom what exactly they were capable of doing. I’m so stoked they are getting their well deserved recognition. If you haven’t, go see em next time they are around. Get blown away.

Missouri Homegrown - ...You Asked For It

1. …You Asked For It- Missouri Homegrown

There is one album that sincerely hasn’t left my car, Missouri Homegrown’s rioutous set at Cafe Acoustic entitled …You Asked For It. Here are some insane facts for you: it is a live recording done in one take with the best recorded sound I’ve heard all year. I openly admit to being a fanboy now, but how can you not be? These guys put in the work to be amazing and trust me, it shows. They do crazy rock n roll better than anyone but my favorite song? “Wagon Wheel Motel,” it’s haunting.

Austin Miller’s Best albums of 2013

Austin Miller is a singer/songwriter from Orlando, Florida. His album More Than One Way was submitted to Vocals On Top for a review during 2013 and was a very welcomed addition to the music library here. The album even snuck its way onto the Vocals On Top Top 10 albums of 2013 list a few weeks ago. Austin was gracious enough to submit a best of 2013 list himself and we are honored to host it here.

Here is the Vocals On Top review of More Than One Way

Do yourself a favor and go check out Austin Miller’s album More Than One Way here: http://austinmiller.bandcamp.com/album/more-than-one-way

Now check out Austin Miller’s best of 2013 list:

Dawes - Stories Don't End

Dawes- Stories Don’t End

This was, without a doubt, my favorite release of the year. On Dawes’ third album, they really hone in on their sound, and Taylor Goldsmith’s songwriting is nothing short of phenomenal. His lyrics are more on the sadder side here, but that sadness is captured in a beautiful way.

Matthew Fowler - Beginning

Matthew Fowler- Beginning
Matthew is a fellow Orlando-ite, and he really gets in right on his first release. All of the songs on Beginning were recorded without a studio. What’s even more remarkable is that he isn’t even twenty yet. He’s got a bright future ahead of him.

Frontier Ruckus - Eternity Of Dimming
Frontier Ruckus- Eternity of Dimming
Matthew Milia has a way with words that is unlike anyone I’ve ever heard. And this 20 song album has a LOT of words. There is a theme of nostalgia throughout the album, mostly focused around Milia’s upbringing in Michigan.

Austin Lucas - Stay Reckless
Austin Lucas- Stay Reckless
Austin Lucas has been churning out albums at a steady pace for seven years now. On this release, Lucas combines the singer/songwriter sound that he has been known for, and a more upbeat alt-country twang sound.

Breathe Owl Breathe - Passage Of Pegasus
Breathe Owl Breathe- Passage of Pegasus
This Michigan three piece has been a favorite of mine since they released Magic Central back in 2010. On my last tour, I was lucky enough to open for them in Denver. Their newest release is definitely their funkiest yet. Lots of great harmonies, string arrangements, and groovy synth.

Vocals On Top’s Top 15 Concerts of 2013

Heading in to 2013 a silent resolution was made to jump in the fire and see as many concerts as possible, the end result being a total of 314 bands. It’s not something I would recommend but it is one way to live and for one year I lived it. Way too many nights strolling in the front door at 1 am knowing that the alarm was already set for about 6:11 am. The high cost of living this way also can’t be discounted, putting a measly $5 in a tip bucket really adds up and with the addition of one or two spirituous beverages it is debatable whether this was a good idea in the first place.

Fiduciary responsibilities aside; it was a ton of fun. I saw performances that really blew me away, I saw tons of people throw their heart on the stage and slowly watch a drunk crowd, paying attention about half the time decide whether or not the show was worth giving a shit about. Many bands weren’t that good, many good bands had bad shows and some bad bands had bad shows and made me wonder what the hell I was doing there. So in 2014 I won’t be doing this again but I will always have 2013 to look back at. Here are some of my favorite shows from that epic year.

Side note: This list was originally a Top 5 then became a Top 10 then I decided “What the Hell?” and made it a Top 15. All my lists start at #1, I don’t know why people start at #10. If people only see one item from my list I want it to be the best one…

1. Lucero and Langhorne Slim – 4/23/13 – The Granada – Lawrence, KS

Lucero's Ben Nichols: All Sewn Up with bad tattoos and one hell of a nice guy.

Lucero’s Ben Nichols: All Sewn Up with bad tattoos and one hell of a nice guy.

I really didn’t realize how good Lucero was going into this night. They came out and lead singer Ben Nichols won over each member of the crowd, seemingly one by one. It was honest, sincere and unscripted. Nichols proved to me he may be one of the best songwriters of the last couple decades. Langhorne Slim would open and have an enthusiastic set which included a victory lap by the lead singer through the audience before their set came to a close.

2. Megajoos / Jerkface / Third Wounded Man – 7/12/13 – First Ward – St. Joseph, MO

Nashville, Tennessee band Megajoos do some head banging during their high-intensity show at The First Ward in St. Joseph, Missouri on 7/12/13. There were better pictures of them but this action shot clearly depicted them in a way that better represented what happened on stage.

Nashville, Tennessee band Megajoos do some head banging during their high-intensity show at The First Ward in St. Joseph, Missouri on 7/12/13.

The Megajoos wore masks and played their unique brand of tongue-in-cheek hard rock with only a bass and drum set. Jerkface riled the crowd up properly before them and had a great set of twangy-Cali-surf-ska. Third Wounded Man started things off with a blistering set including partial covers of The Misfits and Operation Ivy. The show had a special energy that can’t be explained except for saying the right combination of bands and the crowd were all right where they should have been.

3. Andy Grooms / Michael Coman / Colby Walter / Austin Marks – 7/5/13 – Bad Art Bistro – St. Joseph, MO

The Four Swappers: Austin Marks, Andy Grooms, Colby Walter and Michael Coman.

The Four Swappers: Austin Marks, Andy Grooms, Colby Walter and Michael Coman.

Andy Grooms organized this unique even with fellow songwriters to all display just how strong of writers they all are. The evening was almost exclusively original material highlighted by hearing Colby Walter’s originals, Michael Coman’s supreme songwriting, Ausin Marks stripping Eyelit songs down to their core and of course Andy Grooms’ unusual take on piano accompanied songs. It would be the only show I’d see at Bad Art Bistro all year, they should clearly have more shows.

4. Colby Walter – 10/17/13 – Cafe Acoustic – St. Joseph, MO

A couple times a year Colby Walter skillfully takes on a night of all Bob Dylan covers and this was likely the best of the 3 or 4 times he did it in 2013. Dylan is hands down my favorite songwriter so to hear a musical chameleon like Walter fill the role of Dylan for the night is a must-see for me. Coincidentally falling on my birthday it would prove to be likely my best birthday in about a decade.

5. GasTown Lamps / Dsoedean – 10/11/13 – Norty’s – St. Joseph, MO

An unusual venue for bands is always interesting. The GasTown Lamps and Dsoedean would take on the outdoor patio/loft at Norty’s for what seemed to be a predominatly normal show. Then the rains came near the end of The GasTown Lamps set and everyone huddled under to small awning and a normal show became great. So great infact that GTL would re-play half of their set to take advantage of the renewed energy. It would be GTL’s last show as a three piece band.

6. Johnny Hickman / Ed Anderson – 3/11/13 – The Rye Room – Lincoln, NE

Ed Anderson and Johnny Hickman perform live at The Rye Room in Lincoln, Nebraska on 3/11/13.

Ed Anderson and Johnny Hickman perform live at The Rye Room in Lincoln, Nebraska on 3/11/13.

Johnny Hickman is the guitarist for my favorite band Cracker so this show was a given, even though it meant eating a $40 ticket to see the Alabama Shakes because of a snowstorm in Denver. The short tour run for Hickman and Backyard Tire Fire’s Ed Anderson was scheduled with a small opening on this day and I prompted them to add a date in Lincoln/Omaha/Kansas City/Lawrence and to my surprise they obliged. The scantly attended event was a thrill for me and any time Mr. Hickman comes around again, expect me to cancel any and all plans on that day as well.

7. Universe Contest / Scruffy & The Janitors / Cupcake – 3/22/13 – The Rendezvous – St. Joseph, MO

Universe Contest perfoming live at the Rendezvous in St. Joseph, MO on 3/22/13.

Universe Contest perfoming live at the Rendezvous in St. Joseph, MO on 3/22/13.

Nebraska’s Universe Contest took the stage with an elaborate stage setup complete with endless electronics and smoke machines. Their intense set at times you couldn’t see through the bellowing smoke. Cupcake was a very appropriate opener on the night and the unfortunate task of following the over-the-top Universe Contest stage show belonged to Scruffy & The Janitors. They dutifully filled the role but it was clear that Universe Contest had stolen the best moments of the show.

8. Jeff Tweedy – 12/3/13 – The Uptown – Kansas City, MO

How could this not be on my list? Jeff Tweedy is one of the most influential songwriters on my musical tastes and he bared his sole, standing solo with an acoustic guitar on the stage of the nearly sold out Uptown in Kansas City and did not disappoint. He would touch on Uncle Tupelo, Loose Fur and Golden Smog songs and of course a heavy dose of Wilco tunes to delight me and everyone else in the theater.

9. GasTown Lamps / Matthew Coman / Missouri Homegrown / Two Piece Animator – 4/6/13 – The Lucky Tiger – St. Jospeh, MO

Missouri Homegrown playing live at The Lucky Tiger in St. Joseph, MO on 4/6/13.

Missouri Homegrown playing live at The Lucky Tiger in St. Joseph, MO on 4/6/13.

The Lucky Tiger vintage store put on in-store concerts on the first Saturday of each month and while many of them would be very good, this one was likely my favorite. Three full bands playing electric and Matthew Coman taking a solo acoustic approach it proved to be a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I also believe this was the first show that Missouri Homegrown featured three electric guitars.

10. Cupcake / Dsoedean / Third Wounded Man – 4/13/13 – Cafe Acoustic – St. Joseph, MO

Dsoedean busting through their opening set at Cafe Acoustic on 4/13/13. Left to right: Colby Walter, Bobby Floyd and Zale Bledsoe.

Dsoedean busting through their opening set at Cafe Acoustic on 4/13/13. Left to right: Colby Walter, Bobby Floyd and Zale Bledsoe.

For Brian Myers birthday party The Cafe Acoustic scheduled three great bands to be noisy. With Myers heads-on-sticks with random facts on the back of them it was a unique evening to say the least. It would happen to be my first time seeing Third Wounded Man who would quickly rise to become one of my favorite live bands in St. Joe. Marc Darnell makes every Cupcake show interesting and Dsoedean simply did what Dsoedean does, a great combination of bands.

__

This list was originally only 10 but what the hell? It was a great year… here are numbers 11-15:

11. Get Dead / The Sticky Throttles / Burnstyles – 11/18/13 – Cafe Acoustic – St. Joseph, MO

A touring punk band from the East Bay signed to Fat Wreck Chords visited Cafe on an off day from their major nationwide tour and it was the highest intensity of any show I attended this year in St. Joe, even though it was on a Monday. The band had some connections to St. Joe bands The Sticky Throttles and Burnstyles so they opened but it was pandemonium when Get Dead played. Moshing, jumping on stage, grabbing the singer by the collar all occurred during the set, I would expect nothing less if they ever came back.

12. Rancid / Tim Timebomb and Friends – 9/21/13 – The Granada – Lawrence, KS

Rancid brings their 21 years of stage experience to The Granada in Lawrence, KS on 9/21/13.

Rancid brings their 21 years of stage experience to The Granada in Lawrence, KS on 9/21/13.

Rancid has been my favorite punk band for over a decade so finally getting to see them live was awesome. The played a greatest hits-type set with everything you’d expect included. Rancid member Tim Armstrong would open with his side project Tim Timebomb and play a collection of covers and a few originals including a cover over Operation Ivy’s “Sound System.”

13. Dsoedean / Scruffy & The Janitors / Cupcake – 6/22/13 – First Ward – St. Joseph, MO

Dsoedean’s Continue To Move album release party was everything it was expected to be. Advance tickets were sold and everyone got either a CD of the album or a clear 7″ single of two of the songs. Cupcake would be weird as always in opening the show and Scruffy & The Janitors would follow with one of their best sets of the year. Dsoedean would play their new album straight through (as every band should at the release party) and it would be a true celebration of St. Joseph music.

14. Ramey Memo / Matthew Coman – 3/16/13 – The Rendezvous – St. Joseph, MO

A shot of The Ramey Memo's very last show on 3/16/13 at The 'Vous.

A shot of The Ramey Memo’s very last show on 3/16/13 at The ‘Vous.

The Ramey Memo played their farewell show at one of their most frequently played venues, The Rendezvous and officially welcome in the age of Two Piece Animator. Local rapper and YouTube sensation Verbal was set to play but not-surprisingly ended up behind bars and Matthew Coman would fill in and pay homage to the incarcerated rapper by doing a cover of his “hit” song “Reppin’ 816.”

15. The Nightwatchman / Ike Reilly / Jacob George – 5/19/13 – Alamo Draft House – Kansas City, MO

Tom Morello performs some acoustic songs in the Alamo Draft Movie Theater at a benefit for Tomas Young.

Tom Morello performs some acoustic songs in the Alamo Draft Movie Theater at a benefit for Tomas Young.

This was undoubtedly the most unique show of the year. It took place in a movie theater where I sat just a couple rows in front of the legendary guitarist for Rage Against The Machine, Phil Donahue and one of my favorite musicians Ike Reilly. Reilly would travel from Chicago to play just one song before the Body of War documentary would play. The wounded warrior who was the subject of Body of War would even join via video chat and an emotional set by Tom Morello The Nightwatchman would end with his singing with tears in his eyes.

Will I see 300 bands in 2014? No way but I’m sure I’ll see my share.

Teriq Newton of Scruffy & The Janitors Best of 2013

Teriq Newton is an ace guitarist in St. Joseph, Missouri who is a member of Scruffy & The Janitors and The GasTown Lamps. He is a student of music and watches closely what is going on in popular music. His devotion and talent give him possibly the most potential of any of the musicians or bands covered here on Vocals On Top. Look for a big 2014 from him. Here is the music that spoke to him in 2013.

2013 played host to a number of releases. A lot of big name, super-popular albums from the likes of Kanye West, Lorde, Arcade Fire, and Jake Bugg that populated the charts this year. But, you won’t find any of these albums here. This is my Top 5 of 2013. These albums are presented in order, with number one being my favorite and most listened to.

__

 1. Melophobia-Cage the Elephant

Cage The Elephant - Melophobia

Cage the Elephant’s third release, Melophobia, is by far my most listened to album of the year. I have loved this band since their first album and they keep getting better. I believe this one to be their best release so far. I always get nervous when my favorite bands announce the release of a new album. I am always worried that it won’t meet my expectations. Melophobia is one of few albums that have exceeded my expectations.

__

 2. Essential Tremors-J. Roddy Walston & The Business

J. Roddy Wolston & The Business - Essential Tremors

I had the pleasure of opening for J. Roddy Walston & The Business with my band Scruffy & The Janitors this year at the Czar Bar. It was an amazing night; J. Roddy is one of the best live bands I have ever seen, they had the audience eating out of their hands the entire night. The band’s third full-length, Essential Tremors, is definitely deserving of many listens.

__

 3. Sonic Bloom-Night Beats

Night Beats - Sonic Bloom

I was introduced to this band and album by my friend Todd Ward of the GasTown Lamps, and I am sure this album will make it onto his list. The Night Beats make classic psychedelic rock with a modern twist. Their album Sonic Bloom feels very retro but refreshing at the same time. If you’ve worn out your 13th Floor Elevators LP and want something new, give this album a spin.

__

 4. Modern Vampires of the City-Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires of the City

I owe my taste for Vampire Weekend entirely to Katherine McKnight. That being said, I absolutely love their first two albums. I was nervous when I heard that Vampire Weekend were going for a different sound with this album, I didn’t like it at first. After many listens this album grew on me, like all great albums do, I find that it keeps their melodies intact but provides a more varied background. It is hard to describe. Just give it a listen.

__

 5. Other Voices EP-The Orwells

The Orwells - Other Voices EP

The Orwells only released a 4 song EP this year. But, it will have to suffice until their full length comes out next year. The Orwells are a young band, (about the same ages as the members of my band) from Chicago, Il who have been blowing up recently. They are touring with the Arctic Monkeys next year and you can download this EP for free at theorwells.com. You should download it and see what all the fuss is about.

Honorable Mentions: Cat & Mouse EP-Radkey, Self-Titled-Pokey LaFarge, Bankrupt!-Phoenix, Self-Titled-MGMT, Continue to Move-Dsoedean, You Asked For It-Missouri Homegrown, Fade In/Fade Out-The Dead Girls.

Todd Ward of The GasTown Lamps Top 10 albums of 2013

Todd Ward is the lead singer and guitarist for The GasTown Lamps and is also launching a new project in 2014 named Black The Buffalo that will be far different that the power blues approach of GTL. This is Ward’s second year contributing a list for Vocals On Top and he always digs out interesting music that makes me search the used CD and vinyl bins for the next year. Go check out the music of his band at the following website:

Todd Ward’s Top 10 of 2013

1. The Growlers – Hung at Heart: This band is my new favorite psych-rock band and this is their strongest collection of songs yet. Standout tracks: “Salt On A Slug” and “Burden Of The Captain”.

The Growlers - Hung At Heart

2. Night Beats – Sonic Bloom: I love the tone of this album; Lee Blackwell’s guitar playing sounds like a Bayou Country-era John Fogerty. Standout tracks: “Outta Mind” and “Love Ain’t Strange (Everything Else Is)”.

Night Beats - Sonic Bloom

3. Temples – “Shelter Song”/”Prisms” (Single): This could be a double A-side. Both songs are strong. “Shelter Song” is one of my favorite songs of the year; it’s led by a riff that reminds me a lot of The Byrds.

4. King Tuff – Was Dead (Reissue): Kyle Thomas’s second album was one of my favorites of 2012, and this reissue of his first album as King Tuff is another strong set of songs. Standout tracks: “Sun Medallion” and “Dancing On You”.

5. Case Studies – This Is Another Life: Jesse Lortz has been one of my favorite songwriters since his debut with The Dutchess and the Duke. The sound on this album is both desperate and hopeful. Standout tracks: “Driving East, And Through Her”, “House of Silk, House of Stone”, and “Villain”.

6. Fuzz – Fuzz: Ty Segall’s side project reminds me of the best parts of Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, and Fraction. Standout tracks: “Loose Sutures” and “Earthen Gate”.

Fuzz - Fuzz

7. The Growlers – Gilded Pleasures (EP): The second release of the year by one of my favorite bands. They didn’t grow much on this EP, but continue to hone the sound they’ve become comfortable with. Standout tracks: “Humdrum Blues” and “Change In Your Veins”.

8. Queens of the Stone Age – …Like Clockwork: Josh Homme is once again surrounded by yes-men. (Please come back, Nick!) But this is their strongest album since Songs For The Deaf. The sound of this album is sci-fi, forward-thinking yet mechanical dance rock. Standout tracks: “If I Had A Tail” and “Kalopsia”.

9. Temples – “Keep In The Dark”/”Jewel Of Mine Eye” (Single): The sound of “Keep in the Dark” reminds me of a good T. Rex song, while “Jewel Of Mine Eye” has a very cinematic feel to it. Temples debut album, Sun Structures, is one I’m really looking forward to in 2014.

Temples - Keep In the Dark

10. Dead Ghosts – Can’t Get No: A solid debut of garage-psych. This album reminds me a lot of The People’s Temple and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Standout tracks: “Summer With Phil” and “Can’t Get No”.

Honorable Mentions: Bass Drum of Death – Bass Drum of Death, Kelley Stoltz – Double Exposure, Tijuana Panthers – Semi-sweet, Hanni El Khatib – Head In The Dirt, Pokey LaFarge – Pokey LaFarge
